May the Electrostatic Force be With You: Charged Spacecraft Models

چکیده

Remote electrostatic actuation provides a promising method for servicing or deorbiting spacecraft at geosynchronous orbit. This method requires electrostatic modeling more efficient than current commercial finite element analysis software. The Multi-Sphere Method (MSM) provides a way to model electrostatic effects faster than real time by replacing spacecraft with charged sphere distributions. This paper details the development of an optimization routine for MSM that allows it to be applied to more complex spacecraft geometries. The method is tested on a cylinder and a Tie Fighter, with a demonstration of the resulting increase in accuracy.

Reconfiguration Of 3-Craft Coulomb Formation Based on Patched-Conic Section Trajectories

This paper investigates the non-equilibrium fixed-shape three-craft Coulomb formation reconfiguration problem. Being aware of that using the feedback control approach might result in the chattering of the charges due to the non-equilibrium nature of the system dynamics, this paper proposes a trajectory planning approach to accomplish the reconfiguration. The entire maneuver trajectories are div...

Dielectrophoretic effect of nonuniform electric fields on the protoplast cell

In recent years, dielectrophoresis based microfluidics systems have been used to manipulate colloids, inert particles, and biological microparticles, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, cancer cells, bacteria, yeast, micro‌organisms, proteins, DNA, etc. In the current study the governing electric potential equations have been solved in the presence of cell for the purpose of ...

Accommodating the plasma brake experiment on-board the Aalto-1 satellite

Abstract. This paper presents an overview and the current status of hosting the electrostatic plasma brake (EPB) experiment onboard the Finnish Aalto-1 satellite. The goal of the experiment is to demonstrate the use of an electrostatically charged tether for satellite attitude and orbital maneuvers. The plasma brake device is based on electrostatic solar sail concept, invented in Finnish Meteor...

Electrostatic analysis of the charged surface in a solution via the finite element method: The Poisson-Boltzmann theory

Electrostatic potential as well as the local volume charge density are computed for a macromolecule by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation (PBE) using the finite element method (FEM). As a verification, our numerical results for a one dimensional PBE, which corresponds to an infinite-length macromolecule, are compared with the existing analytical solution and good agreement is found. As a ma...

Thermal plasma measurements from the Dynamics Explorer 1 spacecraft using an aperture bias in the outer plasmasphere and over the polar cap show the existence of cold plasma (T ~1 eV) which may otherwise be hidden from the particle detector by positive spacecraft potentials. Operations of the retarding ion mass spectrometer instrument with the external aperture plane biased up to -8 V with resp...
